There were four main Heros in this game: The Barbarian, The Dwarf, The Elf, and The Wizard. Each had their own advantages and disadvantages. My personal favorite has always been the Elf because he has decent armory selection and can use magic.
T H E H E R O E S
The Barbarian is the strongest naturally, but lacks magic. His starting weapon is a Broadsword and has no start armor.

The Dwarf is basicly another Warrior in the game, just with less life and a lower attack, but they can disarm traps.

The Elf is my personal favorite. He possesses some magic(one element) but is able to wield a lot better of weapons than the wizard can.

The Wizard is a great character, and my second favorite but he's attack sucks. Once he is out of magic, the game gets a little tougher if he is the only hero. He can have the most magic out of all the heros(two elements) but he can't equip any armor and can't use very many weapons.
